Patience Ozonkwo and Joke Silva speak on “Victims of the Society”
Nollywood royalties - Patience Ozonkwo, Joke Silva, Alex Usifo lock horn in the new advocacy lick “Victims of the society by actor and film maker Elvis Chuks
Dec 20, 2011
The movie “Victim of the Society” is an advocacy flick done artistically in the aftermath effect of child abuse. It takes a holistic look at what happens when a child is turned into a monster and when the monster is unleashed on the society. The movie explores the damaging effect of abuse and the role of the society.

Speaking elaborately about the movie, Patience Ozonkor says “The story is a very unique one. I felt touched by the storyline of the movie when I read the script. Many people have done stories concerning what people are passing through in the society but they have never touched it the way this script touched it. Look at the background of the girl in the movie, the foundation of the family, when the foundation is broken, every other thing goes wrong. So the foundation matters a lot. Poverty, abject poverty can lead one into a lot of things, lack of care from parents, lack of care from government can lead our children into bad things, for example, using their body to achieve what they want.

“This is the kind of movie we want to be doing now, topical movies that will tell stories that would go anywhere in the world, not just stories that portray things in our society but all societies around the world not just Africans alone. Even the white people go through what was portrayed in this movie which is an international standard movie” Mama Gee said.

Also commenting on the movie, veteran actress Joke Silva says “the movie treats on various issues that affect our society such as human trafficking, the HIV/AIDS surge child abuse and women abuse. Personally what I like about the movie are the topics the movie bothers on, because you know, when one form of abuse is left unchecked, it always leads to more abuses and it keeps going on and on like that and this is what happens in our present day society”

The producer Elvis Chuks became popular with his roles in numerous Nollywood flicks and soap opera such as, Superstory. He is one of the very few to have studied motion pictures outside the shores of this country, where he bagged an advanced diploma in filmmaking. Born in Abia state, he started his movie career when he featured in “Tales by Moonlight” “sweet and sour” and other sitcoms.

When asked who the target audience is, Elvis said “the movie is a movie for the society and it is not for Nigeria alone but for the whole of Africa, according to reports 75% of people in the world have being a victim of one abuse or the other. I am very passionate about this movie because the message cuts across the social classes in our society and the world over”

“Victims of the society” paints a picture of a growing child from a remote area who constantly witnesses the abuse of his mother by his drunken father and he has to come to terms with his two younger sisters who hawk on the street for survival. This movie is intended to sensitize people on the dangers of child neglect, child abuse and women abuse.

Casting Couch: Another Name For Sexual Abuse Women are often forced to exchange sex for favors in the movie industry...it seems children are now joining the list of victims

Casting Couch: Another Name For Sexual Abuse
Women are often forced to exchange sex for favors in the movie industry...it seems children are now joining the list of victims
Several stars have come forward recently with casting couch tales, saying they were appalled and shocked they were asked for sexual favors in order to get coveted jobs in Hollywood.

But for all of the talk of outrage, few of the alleged perpetrators have been named. In fact, a number of entertainment industry experts and insiders declined to even comment on the hot-button issue.
So why are entertainment pros mum when it comes to sexual predators in Hollywood?
“Actors don’t name names for several reasons. Many times it is because they want to move on from that unpleasant experience, or perhaps they succumbed to it, or the ‘perpetrator’ was so huge that they do not want to defame that person because they think highly of their work,” Los Angeles-based celebrity psychologist, Dr. Nancy Irwin, says, “Others don’t want to be labeled a ‘snitch’ or feel nobody will believe them because it is such a cliché. Sadly, the cliché does perpetuate, probably because the creative process in and of itself can be a seductive process, and the temptation is non-stop in Hollywood.”
Hollywood-based career strategist Suzannah Galland said she hears many horror stories from friends who are top actresses. These victims don’t name names “out of fear,” but she says code of silence can turn tragic.

"Two (friends) have told me of date rapes perpetrated by major male stars. In both cases, these women agreed to a friendly dinner,” she said. “One of these friends had no interest in a romantic relationship at all with the star that was pursuing her, and she made that clear to him. All the same she was in awe of the man’s talent, and happy to discuss possible roles with him. An alliance would have been hugely helpful to her career. So she was trusting when he invited her after dinner to stop by his hotel, where he had a stack of scripts to show her. Once the door was shut, he raped her. ’I never told anybody,’ she explained to me, ‘because he is who he is and I was ashamed.’”

Another friend confided to Galland that she was approached by an award-winning actor she found attractive. However, when she went back to his place to “discuss scripts,” things took an ugly turn.
“Even though she was willing to be romanced, that never happened. He beat her then raped her. She spent years in recovery, conflicted and ashamed,” Galland explained. “She made no public complaint.’”
According to Irwin, by not revealing the predators, celebrities are contributing to the problem and putting others at risk of becoming the next victim.
“I always encourage actors to file a complaint anonymously through the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) because they care about this issue deeply,” she said. “It is up to talent to set the boundary and disallow abuse. If this happens enough, and SAG disciplines the abuser, hopefully they will seek the professional help they need to halt this inappropriate and damaging behavior.”
SAG National Director of Affirmative Action and Diversity, Adam Moore, said that despite gains made over the years toward workplace equality, performers still often face workplace discrimination and sexual harassment on set or during auditions.
“Neither discrimination nor harassment is your fault. When you see or become a victim of discrimination or harassment, don’t ignore it and don’t pretend it did not happen -- let someone know,” Moore advised, adding that the issue is taken incredibly seriously by the union. “Have no fear that this will get out to the industry: your call is entirely confidential and nothing will be done without your express consent. Every action taken against this behavior means it is less likely to be repeated. You have a responsibility to yourself and your fellow Guild members to see that all performers are treated with respect in the job search and in the workplace.”
If SAG deems a complaint appropriate, the Guild sends a copy of their policy along with a letter advising the alleged perpetrator of the complaint, and demands that the production company involved investigate the concern and take immediate action to remedy any inappropriate conduct.
Someone might want to tell some of today’s top stars about SAG’s complaint process.
Megan Fox told British GQ that she was “heartbroken” over the number of legendary Hollywood directors that had tried to bed her since she found fame. Lisa Rinna claimed she missed out on a role in a prominent television series because she refused to give a producer “a quickie.” Gwyneth Paltrow recently told Elle Magazine that when she was just starting out it was suggested that a business meeting be finished in the bedroom. In an interview with People magazine, Charlize Theron divulged that in her modeling days, she was invited to a well-known director’s home for a casting call – only to find him in his pajamas mixing drinks. And in her best-selling book “Suck It, Wonder Woman!” Olivia Munn dished out a jaw-dropping supply of stories from sleeping with a famous director in her rookie days to visiting an agent’s home who had a collage of vaginas on his wall.
And it’s not just women.
"I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia," 80’s sensation Corey Feldman told ABC's "Nightline" last August. "That's the biggest problem for children in this industry... It's the big secret."
Hollywood publicist Angie Meyer urges victims, famous or not, to come forward and name names.
“To set a precedent, just one person needs to come forward to ignite an investigation, and involve authorities,” she said. “In order for these perpetrators to become fearful of consequence – the ramifications must be so severe that they risk losing more than their reputations, job and any continuous Hollywood career.”
But former theatrical agent and founder of online casting service GotCast.com, Alec Shankman, said that as long as celebrities continue to their stories – even without exposing the culprit – they are still helping to curb the problem.
“Hollywood is a very small community and careers are very volatile, so often people feel that the risks and making waves in the community might outweigh the desire to speak out and name names,” he explained. “Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the behavior can be stopped entirely. Much like sexual harassment in the workplace, it is an ongoing issue. But as long as young, new talent are properly educated and informed about all of the legitimate ways to reach success, they will be more likely to avoid any of the less legitimate opportunities that might present themselves."

Abuja ROCKED! That summed up proceedings at the third edition of the Amstel Malta Showtime.
The event, which was anchored by Darey ‘Art’ Alade, was held on October 26, 2011, at the ThisDay Dome, Abuja. It was an explosive affair which saw top musical stars including M.I, Banky W and Wiz Kid performing before an ecstatic audience. There was hilarious comedy from comic Buchi, while ace dance group, Dance Na The Main Thing, entertained the audience with their breathtaking dance routine.
The occasion also featured a special talent hunt where wannabe superstars slugged it out in singing, dance and comedy competitions. Samuel Falowo, 19, a 100 level student of the University of Abuja emerged as winner in the singing competition while Martins Currie, 23, a 200 level Fine Art Student of Delta State University clinched first place in the dance category. Martins Neboh, a 25 years old graduate of Mechanical Engineering, from the Enugu State University, also won first prize in the comedy category.
The winners in each category got shopping vouchers worth N100, 000, a laptop and a special trip for two in Lagos as first place prize. In addition to their prizes, the winners were also given the opportunity to perform with the stars that performed that night. The runners up did not go away empty handed as the first runners-up got shopping vouchers worth N50,000, while second runners-up were awarded shopping vouchers worth N25,000.
Speaking after the event, Samuel Falowo, who won in the singing competition, expressed gratitude to Amstel Malta for the opportunity to display his singing talent.  “I would like to say thank you for Amstel Malta for this opportunity. Everybody had fun today but for me, the opportunity to show what I can do before such an audience is something I will appreciate Amstel Malta for, for the rest of my life. Before Amstel Malta Showtime, I never really had an experience like this, so you can understand where I am coming from,” he said.
He also talked of the experience of performing alongside M.I. ‘’It is unbelievable. I can’t imagine that I just shared the same stage with M.I, the best rapper in the country. It is really mind blowing,” he said.
Echoing Falowo, Akwa-Ibom born Martins Currie described Amstel Malta Showtime Abuja as the biggest moment of his life:  “This is by far the biggest moment of my life as far as my dancing talent is concerned. I can’t describe everything that has happened to me. I want to commend Amstel Malta Showtime for putting in so much effort in organizing an event such as this,’’ he said.
Martins Neboh, from Enugu State, winner of the comedy category, also praised the organizers for giving him a chance to display his comic skills. According to him, he had failed to progress beyond the audition stage at the Enugu edition of the event but he decided to come to Abuja to try his luck. “I was unsuccessful at Enugu last month at the Amstel Malta Auditions so I decided to come over to Enugu to try my luck. I just want to thank Amstel Malta for the opportunity to showcase my talent,’’ he said.
Also speaking during the event was Mrs. Adedoyin Owotomo, Brand Manager, Amstel Malta, who described the event as a successful. “I think this has been a successful event. The members of the audience have had a nice time and I am impressed with the performance of M.I and others,” she said.
Continuing, Owotomo added that the event would serve as a platform for future superstars. "Beyond the entertainment and glitz, let’s not forget that was a platform for future superstars. For some of them it is probably the biggest experience they have ever had and for others it’s their first time before such an audience. So if Amstel Malta has been able to motivate them to chase their dreams then we have achieved our mission. What Amstel Malta is doing is giving them the opportunity to be the best that they can be,” she said.
Amstel Malta Showtime, Abuja was the third in the series, having being held in Owerri, capital of Imo State and Enugu State, in August and September this year.
Next step is Lagos where the Amstel Malta Showtime train is scheduled to berth on November 18, 2011.

how duncan mighty and terry G deal went wrong

Mo' Hits producer and CEO Don Jazzy spoke on the meeting with Duncan Mighty that almost got him signed to the label.
Q: Was Duncan Mighty ever on your label?

I like his music and he’s talented. And everybody knows I like to attend concerts. Once anyone has good music, I’ll be there to support. I didn’t get that much love from artistes when I was growing and I would have loved that. If I could attend Tuface, Daddy Showkey’s concerts, that’ll encourage us to move on. I also give them advice on a daily basis. So whenever I see someone with good music, I go all out to support him and it doesn’t have anything to do with competition.

Anytime my boys go to perform in Port-Harcourt, they always tell me that those guys there love Duncan Mighty. So I invited him to Lagos and he came to the house. I told the boys that I’d like to work with him. We had a meeting and I wanted to sign him or do a promotion deal with him. And since he’s also a producer, maybe he’ll be as a sort of co-producer for my label to help reduce some work load. But now, the same thing that happened with Terry G at some point happened. Because if it’s Mo’hits Records, everybody gets excited.

We haven’t signed any deal and he went ahead to tell people that he’s been signed to Mo’Hits. I was in America when I read on the internet that Duncan Mighty has been signed to Mo’Hits Records. And I hadn’t made up my mind yet about him. When I read it, I had to deny on the internet. I was hoping that after I’ve signed him, then I could tell everyone about it, but he took shine away from me. I called Bankuli and asked how the gist came about. I was told he’d already granted interviews saying he’s been signed on by Mo’hits to work as a producer and vocal coach. I ended the deal.

Q: What about the JJC thing?

We were working together but had a misunderstanding. I don’t want to start defending myself or say it’s his fault. I’ll gain nothing by putting him down.

Dr. Murray now faces up to four years in prison and the suspension of his medical license.

Michael Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray guilty of manslaughter
Dr. Murray now faces up to four years in prison and the suspension of his medical license.
Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The Texas physician who administered a powerful surgical anaesthetic to Michael Jackson hours before his death in 2009 was convicted of involuntary manslaughter today following a six-week trial in which he was slammed for his "unconscionable" professional behaviour and neglect of his celebrity patient. The jury deliberated for six hours on Friday then two hours on Monday before returning their unanimous verdict against Dr Conrad Murray. He now faces up to four years in prison and the suspension of his medical license.

Murray showed no emotion as the verdict was read. The news was greeted with enthusiasm by a noisy group of Jackson supporters outside the courthouse who spent the morning chanting "Justice for Michael!" and "Find Conrad Murray Guilty!", some waving banners praising Jesus

During the trial, the jury heard how Murray abandoned his practice to work exclusively for Jackson for $150,000 per month, how he ordered gallons of the surgical anaesthetic propofol in response to Jackson's complaints about insomnia as he was preparing for a new world tour, how Murray administered propofol on the morning of Jackson's death and – according to the prosecution – was directly responsible for delivering the final, lethal dose.

Murray's defence lawyers tried to argue that it was Jackson himself, not Murray, who administered the last injection and that the Jackson family, the prosecution and the public at large had been over-anxious to find someone on whom to pin blame for the star's self-inflicted death.

"If it were anybody else but Michael Jackson, would this doctor be here today?" Murray's lead lawyer, Ed Chernoff, asked in his summing up.

The jury's answer to that question was, apparently, yes; that Murray had behaved in ways no doctor should ever behave. The defence did not dispute that Murray was responsible for propofol being in Jackson's home. And they did not dispute that Murray left Jackson alone after administering a dose of it on the morning of his death – even though standard medical practice insists on an anaesthesiologist or qualified technician remaining at the patient's side at all times.

David Walgren, the lead prosecutor, argued that Murray was criminally responsible for Jackson's death, whether or not the jury believed the story about Jackson grabbing a syringe and essentially killing himself. Just getting him close enough to propofol and giving him the opportunity to take it unsupervised, he said, constituted involuntary manslaughter on its own. He called it an "obscene experiment".

"This is bizarre, unethical, unconscionable behaviour," he said in his own closing statement. "Michael Jackson trusted Conrad Murray. He trusted him with his life; he paid with his life."

Walgren highlighted the many inconsistencies in Murray's public statements, the fact that it took him two days to acknowledge to police that he had administered propofol, the delay in calling emergency services after Jackson's lifeless body was discovered on his bed and other damning details. "Conrad Murray did not call 911 because he had other things on his mind – to protect Conrad Murray," Walgren charged.

Ultimately, though, the trial revolved around the testimony of just one witness, the research anaesthesiologist Paul White, who testified that he found the defence's theory persuasive. Intriguingly, that put him directly at odds with a colleague and former student, Steve Shafer, who was the government's star expert witness and asserted that the "only scenario" accounting for Jackson's death was that Murray put him on an intravenous propofol drip which was then dismantled before the cops arrived.

king sunny ade

Sunny Ade - King Of Juju Music
King Sunny Ade, born September 22, 1946, is a popular Nigerian Jùjú music artiste and a pioneer of modern world music. He has been classed as one of the most influential musicians of all time.
Adé was born to a Nigerian royal family in Ondo. His father was a church organist, while his mother was a trader. Ade left grammar school in Ondo under the pretence of going to the University of Lagos. There in Lagos his mercurial musical career started.

Sunny Ade’s musical sound has evolved from the early days. His career began with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies, a highlife band. He left to form The Green Spots in 1967. Over the years, for various reasons ranging from change in his music to business concerns, Sunny Ade’s band changed its name several times, first to African Beats and then to Golden Mercury.

In the 70s and 80s, Sunny Ade embarked on a tour of America and Europe where he played to mixed audiences. His stage act was characterised by dexterous dancing steps and mastery of the guitar. Trey Anastasio, American guitarist, composer and one of his devout followers, once said,

Sunny Ade’s music is characterised by, among other instruments, the Talking drum - an instrument indigenous to his Yoruba roots, the guitar and his peculiar application to juju music that would easily put him in the same class as guitar musicians like Santana. His music is in the age old tradition of singing poetic lyrics, (“Ewi” in Yoruba) and praise of dignitaries as well components of “juju” (traditional African belief) called the “Ogede”-”casting a spell”. Hence, Adé’s music constitutes a record of the oral tradition of his people for posterity.

Sunny Ade was the first to introduce the pedal steel guitar to Nigerian Pop music. He was the first to introduce the use of synthesizers, clavinet, vibraphone, tenor guitar into the juju music repertoire such as dub and wah-wah guitar licks.

After the death of Bob Marley, Island Records began looking for another third world artiste to put on its contract. While Fela Kuti had just been signed by Arista Records, producer Martin Meissonnier introduced King Sunny Ade to Chris Blackwell, leading to their release of Juju Music in 1982. Many music aficionados are quick to point out that Sunny Ade’s brand music of Juju could not be ignored by anyone at the time. Today, this seminal recording is often acclaimed as one of the most important records from Africa. Ade gained a wide following with this album and was soon billed as “the African Bob Marley”.

Sunny Ade has said in the past that his refusal to allow Island to meddle with his compositions and over-Europeanise and Americanise his music were the reasons why Island then decided to look elsewhere.

Sunny has collaborated with major artistes such as Manu Dibango (WAKAFRIKA) and Stevie Wonder (played harmonica in Aura).
Sunny Ade’s brief recordings with Island records opened the floodgates for other world music artiste like Senegalese Youssou N’Dour, Mali’s Salif Keita and a host of others.
Twice Grammy Award Nominee

In 1987, Sunny Ade returned to international spotlight when Rykodisc released a live concert he did in Seattle and was given an astonishing embrace by fans across the globe that were eager for another international album release.

He soon employed an American manager, Andrew Frankel, negotiated another three album record deal with the Mesa record label (a Division of Paradise Group) in America. One of these albums was 1998’s Odu, a collection of traditional Yoruba songs, with which he was nominated for the second Grammy Award and thus making him the first African to be nominated twice for a Grammy.

In the 80s, Ade embarked on a career in Hollywood. His music was featured in the 1983 film, Breathless, starring, Richard Gere, and the 1986 comedy, One More Saturday Night, and he acted in Robert Altman’s 1987 comedy O.C. and Stiggs.

At the beginning of another round of tour of the United States and Canada, Sunny Ade, now known as The Chairman Nigeria, was appointed visiting professor of Music at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife. In July of the same year, King Sunny Ade was inducted into the Afropop Hall of Fame, at the Brooklyn African Festival U.S.A. He dedicated the award to the recently deceased Michael Jackson.

Nicki Minaj says she contemplated suicide before she got famous

Nicki talks low point

Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful women in hip-hop so it’s hard to imagine the singer ever wanting to take her own life. Minaj told Cosmopolitan magazine that she thought about suicide before her career took off saying, “At one point, I was, like, ‘What would happen if I just didn’t wake up?’ That’s how I felt. Like maybe I should just take my life? I would pray to god to make me famous so that I could buy my mother a huge house.” Thankfully, Nicki is alive and well and probably more famous than she ever dreamed. She’s featured on the new Willow Smith track, “Fireball,” which is out now.
